We seek demilitarizing Syrian status: Annan

TEHRAN (ISNA)-The UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan appreciating Iran's support for Syrian issue stressed demilitarizing situation of the neighboring country.

Speaking in a press conference in Tehran Wednesday with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, Annan said, "We should support the process of resolving Syrian crisis jointly and we appreciate Iran's support."

"We have called for coalition forces to stop attacks. We have had contacts with them and they have given positive response. Also there should be guarantees from both government and the opposition. The government and the other sides should respect the ceasefire," he added.

Also regarding mobilization of observing forces of the UN in Syria, Annan said, "The measure will be taken whenever the UN Security Council decides and raise the issue."

Salehi on his part said changes in Syria should be implemented by Damascus government.

He added Iran believes that Syrian nation should have rights enjoyed by other countries such as parties' freedom, election freedom and constitution.

"We have also declared we are against interference in internal affairs of countries such as Syria and any change in Syria should be put into practice by the government."

Syria has seen unrest since mid March 2011.

Also Annan's six-point plan stresses ceasefire, access of aid and human agencies, end to violence, as well as political talks between Damascus and the opposition.

The US and its Arab allies as well as Turkey have supported weapon and financial support for opposition of Bashar al-Assad.
